In the ITER project, the first procurement arrangement of the superconducting conductors for the TF coils was signed between the ITER Organization and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) on 28th November 2007. The JAEA has made the contract for the fabrication of the conductors with Japanese companies, in March 2008. The status of the fabrication of the conductors will be described in this paper. The test of PFCI was carried out at the Naka Fusion Institute of the JAEA, from May to August 2008. The PFCI is a single-layer solenoid, wound from about 50 m of a full-size ITER cable-in-conduit conductor. The winding diameter and height are about 1.5 m and 1 m, respectively. The nominal design current of the conductor is 45 kA at 6 T and 4.5 K. The main measured items in the PFCI test programme are current sharing temperature, critical current and ac losses. These results will be reported.

no journal, ,

JAEA performed the charging test of conductors for ITER TF coil for conductor qualification. After the charging test, JAEA measured the resudual strain of jackets and performed X-ray CT scan of conductors. The resudual strain varied along the conductor, and about 0.8 mm deformation of the cable in the jacket was found at the high field resion. This shows inspection results of TF coil conductors after charging test.

JAEA is responsible for the procurement of the CS conductor of the ITER magnet system. In order to start the procurement of the CS conductor, the performance of the CS conductor have to be demonstrated. The qualification sample has been fabricated for the test using SULTAN apparatus at the Plasma Physics Research Centre (CRPP) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL). In this presentation, the design and the fabrication of the qualification sample is reported. The residual strain should be controlled for the measurement of the correct performance. The neutron diffraction will be applied to the direct measurement of the strain of the superconducting cable. This plan is also presented.

no journal, ,

The upgrade of JT-60U magnet system to superconducting coils (JT-60SA) has been decided by both parties of Japan and EU in the framework of the Broader Approach agreement. The final specifications of a central solenoid and equilibrium field coils are defined by optimizing the operational flexibility of plasma scenario. These coils are designed and evaluated to meet requirements. The fabrication of superconducting conductors for the poloidal field coils has been started from April 2008, in parallel with the detailed design of each coil.
